Ex- FBI Director James Comey Files Innocent Plea to Charges of Lying Congress
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's attorney filed the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
His attorney stated he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple causes including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
James Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the magistrate they planned to file several legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a trial, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's legal matter was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Trump after his probe into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
Judicial Environment
The former director appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration terminated.
Following the reading to the judge read his rights and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he stated to the court.
Historical Information
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.
Present Charges
The federal government claim Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the upper house by saying he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to media organizations details about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, block and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
Through a recording James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"We have been aware for years that there are costs to standing up to the former president," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president published on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute James Comey and others.
