The national team brought an end to the reigning champions South Africa's winning streak by completing a 93-run victory in an exciting and hard-fought first Test in the city of Lahore.

The Proteas, who had a 10-match winning streak in Test cricket culminated in a win against the Aussies in the WTC final in June, were dismissed for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Starting the day on 51 for two, they saw the dismissal of first-innings centurion Tony de Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Afridi to the third ball of the day to shift the finely-poised chase in the home team's favour.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who secured 10-191 in the game, dismissed Tristan Stubbs for two and clean bowled Brevis, who offered some resistance with a rapid 54.

Off-spinner Sajid also took advantage of sharp turn to end opening batsman Rickelton's innings - he faced 145 deliveries for 45 runs - and Shaheen came back in the post-lunch session to knock over the tail with a fine display of reverse-swing bowling.

He had Verreynne leg before for 19 and bowled Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to seal the victory.

It was each team's opening game of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle and moves Pakistan straight into the number two spot after table-toppers the Australian team.

The win was founded on contributions of 93 by opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, all-rounder Salman Agha which boosted them to 378.

From there slow bowlers Noman Ali and Sajid took advantage of favourable home conditions, as they did in their series victory over England the previous year, to sustain their lead.

The next and final Test begins on October 20.
